Rhode Takes Gold In Women's Double Trap
by Craig Bohnert
Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) won the gold medal in women's double trap at the Markopoulo Shooting Center Wednesday afternoon.
The following are quotes from Rhode after winning gold in Athens.
QUESTION: What she is feeling right now?
RHODE: "I don't think it has hit me yet. I mean I still can't believe I won. I'm sure it will hit me when I get back to the states."
QUESTION: What the reaction will be from hometown?
RHODE: "Well in 1996 they threw a parade in my honor. A lot of my friends and family met me at the airport. It was amazing the support I received. I can't imagine what the reaction will be this time. Probably a lot the same. But this time, I will probably go to a lot more parties. (she laughs) Sorry Dad."
QUESTION: What it means for her to win the first gold and last gold in her Olympic double trap career?
RHODE: Well it's a mix of good and bad. I mean it is sad because I look back at it with tons of memories, but it is also a start of a new era. A new event brings on a new challenge. I hope to shoot both skeet and trap at the 2008 Olympics. But we will just have to see what happens.
QUESTION: What it was like to have so much family and friends in the stands?
RHODE: It was great--Like I had my own cheering squad.
QUESTION: What she will do next?
RHODE: I will travel to a nearby island and stay a couple days with my family to try to relax and soak all of this in.
